This also no doubt impacts games fans want to play and where they can play them, like Final Fantasy 16. As reported by Gamesradar, Final Fantasy 16 trended on Twitter in Japan following the announcement, with fans calling on Square Enix to bring it to PC.

Some fans called for it to release on Steam, while others pointed toward the Epic Games Store, but the general message is clear: Final Fantasy 16 fans want the game on a PC platform they don’t have to pay an increased price for. Many also lament how this change in price is also likely to stop them from playing the game, as having the funds and acquiring the console have become much more difficult. Many have compared such a move to the PC port of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which makes sense though it’s worth noting that it came out much later than the base game, and a few others are calling for a PS4 release to counter this, which is even more unlikely than PC availability at launch.

Unfortunately, this is unlikely to happen. While this PS5 price could, theoretically speaking, somehow impact Sony’s agreement with Square Enix, there is clearly an agreement in place to ensure that Final Fantasy 16 releases on PS5 first. At the reveal, there was some mention of PC that was scrubbed almost immediately after. It stands to reason then that Final Fantasy 16 is a timed PS5 exclusive that could come to PC after 6 months or a year is up, but neither Sony nor Square Enix have made the messaging around that clear.

Not to mention, at that point, several PS5 players will have beaten the game, and the internet will no doubt be filled with spoilers. In other words, if someone doesn’t have a PS5 and, as a result of this price hike, has to wait to experience the game, they are likely to be spoiled well before this timed exclusivity period is up. It does remain to see how it all shakes out, but it’s perfectly understandable why many are unhappy with this announcement (however understandable the announcement is, in and of itself).
